Off-Shore Oil Rigs Have Been "Incapacitated" By Malware Thanks To Pirated Music and Porn

Some Off-Shore Oil Rigs Have Been "Incapacitated" By Malware Thanks To Pirated Music and Porn Hacks have been popping up all over the place recently. Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter, various news organizations. And off-shore oil rigs aren't to be left out. According to the Houston Chronicle, more than one of the things have been "incapacitated" by malware that can be traced back to the Internet's most common vices: pirated music and porn.

The Chronicle relays reports from unnamed cybersecurity professionals that indicate there are plenty of cases in which these literal islands of Internet disconnection have been infected, "exposing gaps in security that could pose serious risks to people and the environment." Conventional Internet isn't readily available on rigs, but the malware still gets in, sometimes due to satellite downloads, or good old-fashioned USB-drive stashes.

Obviously malware is never a good thing, but experts seem to be worried about infection on rigs in particular as it could lead to something like "a well blowout, explosion, oil spill and lost human lives." And the whole situation is made worse due to the fact that many rigs, apparently, have little to no standards in place to keep malware at bay. One of the professionals described a situation in the gulf coast this way to the Chronicle: "They literally had a worm that was flooding their network, and they're out in the middle of the ocean."

So far there haven't been any real catastrophic events, and chances are the malware that's screwing stuff up is just nuance-grade, gumming up the works. But if something was to be directly targeted at the rigs, things could be much worse. Maybe it's time someone updated that anti-virus software; getting rid of the porn is out of the question. Man sought in attempted kidnap of 2 Calif. girls

WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) ? An 11-year-old girl walking alone near a Southern California park was grabbed by a man and shoved into the back seat of a car where a sobbing 7-year-old was already being held, investigators said Friday.

The young girls were apparently the target of the same man prowling Whittier neighborhood parks for young victims earlier this month.

The older girl, accosted Thursday afternoon, managed to get out of the car and free the 7-year-old and both girls ran in different directions to escape the suspect, Officer Brad White said.

The 11-year-old ran from Founders Park and called police when she got home. The identity and whereabouts of the younger girl are unknown.

"We have not received any information on the 7-year-old," White said, adding there are no reports of missing children in the suburb 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The girls do not know each other and the 11-year-old wasn't hurt.

Extra police were on duty Friday in the hunt for the suspect in a red convertible with a tan top. He was described as a 25- to 35-year-old, Hispanic, about 6 feet tall with a medium to heavy build. School superintendents have also been alerted.

The 11-year-old girl said he had short black hair with three dots tattooed on his left hand.

"It is very unusual for Whittier," White said. "We're taking it very seriously. We are following any leads we have."

The same man approached three teenage girls earlier this month, authorities said.

Just before noon on Feb. 5, a man matching the same description and driving a red convertible pulled up to a 17-year-old girl walking near Broadway Park and asked her if she wanted a ride.

"After the victim told him no, he proceeded to stop the car and open the door," Lt. Kent Miller said in a statement. "The female fled and called the police."

About five hours later, a witness called police and said two teenage girls near Central Park were arguing with a man who had ordered them into his red convertible, White said.

The suspect drove away and the girls left on foot.

White said the witness didn't know the teen girls, and they didn't call police.

Video: Romney resurfaces, will speak at CPAC

>>> mitt romney 's return to the political spotlight to speak at cpac next month caused a lot of buzz, especially among conservatives who want to know why. since word came down that there's been nothing from -- been nothing from romney about the goal and how it factors in to his next move. conservative radio talk show host steve dais not shy of criticized mitt romney lists reasons why the former candidate decided to quote break radio silence . steve joins us via skype. good to see you.

>> you, as well. how have you been?

>> great. seems like you're channelling david letterman . when's the inspiration? are you as baffled as other conservatives why mitt romney wants to return to cpac and the spotlight this way?

>> yeah. and there's a lot of possible reasons for why romney would want to return. none of them are good. unless it includes an apology but that its would be another romney flip flop because the last book is called "no apologies" and might be a romney flip flop we conservatives might welcome. there's no reason to bring him back. frankly, unless he's going to do a speech titled whatnot to do when running for president. maybe bob dole and george herbert walker bush have too much dignity to deliver. john mccain probably lost his voice this week and ford is dead so that leaves it to mitt romney .

>> i want to get to four of the things on the top ten list. romney finally figured out it was time to talk about benghazi. fellow republicans kept the story alive as it should. you're hitting romney on this one. you can't let it go.

>> no. my show airs at night around the country and we would do live mystery live theater on the presidential debates and sit here and watch questions of benghazi come up and romney never addressed it. he punts every single time and if that's going to be the case then i guess, you know, for we conservatives, why should we want him to win more than he does? very frustrating.

>> number three, jealous of the positive press karl rove is getting. i want to get to number two. you say romney wants to make the case why self-deporting amnesty is our sure-fire way of securing more of the hispanic vote. sounds like you're trying to get him to explain why the party is abandoned by the hispanic voters.

>> it's my personal favorite. he always puts the best number two, as well. it's romney 's attempt to take every side of every issue. back to the primary each year he attacked newt gingrich from the right on issues like amnesty and the self-deportation card and then right down the same audience in florida and the general election and then came out for amnesty and the president's amnesty plans so that is mitt romney in a nutshell taking every side to every issue. if you ask mitt romney where he is on the issues, the answer is, yes.

>> your number one reason you want to tell the audience?

>> it's probably the closest he's going to get to the white house . and sadly, for we conservatives, if you want to know what a romney administration would have looked like, you're probably looking at it right now.

>> very interesting list and surely we'll have you back on after mr. romney 's delivers the

Boeing proposes full 787 battery fix to FAA

Boeing gave U.S. aviation regulators its plan to fix the volatile battery aboard its new 787 Dreamliner on Friday, even before investigators know what caused the batteries to overheat on two planes last month.

Boeing will not propose abandoning the lithium-ion batteries, however, and is not working on a backup or longer-term fix for the problem that has grounded its entire fleet of 50 787 Dreamliners, three sources familiar with the plan said.

The proposal, made to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, includes specific measures aimed at addressing possible causes of short-circuits that prompted one of the lithium-ion batteries on board a 787 to catch fire at a Boston airport in January, the sources said. A second battery smoldered during a flight in Japan a few days later, leading to an emergency landing and evacuation.

The proposal includes insulation between the cells of the battery and a stronger, stainless steel box with a venting tube to contain a fire and expel fumes outside the aircraft should a battery catch fire again, the sources said.

"I have talked to a number of people who are working directly on these batteries. No one is on the Plan-B team," said a person familiar with Boeing's efforts who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Boeing's proposal to the FAA is not a temporary "band-aid" that would be supplanted by another solution later, said a second source, who also was not authorized to speak publicly.

The FAA said in a statement Friday that it is reviewing Boeing's proposal. "The safety of the flying public is our top priority and we won?t allow the 787 to return to commercial service until we?re confident that any proposed solution has addressed the battery failure risks," the statement said.

Boeing declined to comment specifically on its proposal, and reiterated that hundreds of engineers and technical experts are working "around the clock" to return the 787 fleet to service. "Everyone is working to get to the answer as quickly as possible and good progress is being made," spokesman Marc Birtel said.

Five weeks after U.S. authorities grounded the worldwide fleet of 787s, U.S., Japanese and French investigators are still not certain what caused the battery fire aboard an All Nippon Airways 787 in Boston and an overheated, smoking battery on a Japan Airlines 787 in Japan.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the Boston fire and the Japan Transportation Safety Board is investigating the battery failure in Japan. Neither have found a root cause for the problems.

The sources said it is possible the NTSB might never determine the root cause.

Judge blocks shareholder vote on Apple proposal

(AP) ? A federal judge is blocking Apple from conducting a shareholder vote on a package of governance proposals, handing a victory to a rebel investor who is trying to persuade the company to share more of its cash with its investors.

U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in New York ruled Friday that Apple was wrong to bundle four amendments to its corporate charter into one proposal for a vote at next Wednesday's annual meeting. Shareholders should get to vote on the amendments separately, he said. Although the ruling was preliminary, before both sides had a chance to fully make their case, Sullivan said Apple was likely to lose. He granted dissident investors a preliminary injunction against Apple pending a full trial.

Greenlight Capital, a hedge fund run by Wall Street maverick David Einhorn, sued Apple over the proposal because it would remove the board's ability to issue preferred stock without shareholder authorization. Einhorn wants Apple to issue "iPrefs," preferred shares with a guaranteed dividend, as a way of committing the company to sharing its massive profits with shareholders.

Einhorn has been trying to rally Wall Street to vote against the Apple proposal as a way of showing their displeasure with the company's capital-allocation policies. Right now, Apple hands only a small amount of its profits to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. The rest of the money goes in the bank, where Apple's cash hoard amounted to $137 billion at the end of last year. That amount grows by about $40 billion every year, much of it from selling trend-setting gadgets such as the iPad and the iPhone.

Investors almost universally want Apple to hand out at least some of that cash, but Einhorn hasn't gotten much support for his "iPrefs" idea or his "No on Proposal 2" campaign.

Apple didn't immediately respond to requests for comment Friday.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's proposal puts more power in the hands of shareholders, making it difficult to understand why a shareholder would fight it. Calling Greenlight's campaign a waste of time, Cook said Apple wouldn't squander money by mailing letters to shareholders to persuade them to vote for the proposal.

The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, had said it would vote for Apple's proposal, because it would have strengthened shareholder rights. Among other measures, it would let shareholders vote against directors.

Apple's stock fell 31 cents to $450.50 in extended trading after the ruling came out.

"This is a significant win for all Apple shareholders and for good corporate governance," Greenlight said in a statement. "We are pleased the court has recognized that Apple's proxy is not compliant with (federal securities) rules because it bundles different matters in Proposal 2. We look forward to Apple's evaluation of our iPref idea and we encourage fellow shareholders to urge Apple to unlock the significant value residing on its balance sheet."

A company with excess cash will usually reward shareholders by raising its dividend or issuing a one-time dividend. It could also buy back more shares. Einhorn believes none of these routes would yield as much shareholder value as the iPrefs, because their 4 percent annual dividend yield would make them attractive to investors that otherwise wouldn't look at Apple shares, such as pension funds and endowments.

Greenlight has been an Apple shareholder since 2010 and has 1.3 million shares worth about $580 million.
